I was just wondering aren't words not spelled the way they are prounounced in the dictionary?

When you look up a word in the dictionary, you get the word and next to the word in parenthesis it gives you the prounounciation spelling of the word. Why not just spell it the way it's prounounced?I was just wondering aren't words not spelled the way they are prounounced in the dictionary?
That would be too easy :-)I was just wondering aren't words not spelled the way they are prounounced in the dictionary?

and probably because almost everyone pronounces words somewhat differently, reguardless of the pronounciation spelling of words in the dictionary. people have accents and things like that.I was just wondering aren't words not spelled the way they are prounounced in the dictionary?
The spelling system of English was invented a long time ago, back when the pronunciation was different. At that time, the spelling was a relatively good representation of the pronunciation. Since then, the pronunciation has changed, but the spelling hasn't.
the english language is culled from so many sources, and spoken in so many different places around the globe, that phonetic spelling is simply not feasible.
