Is there a way to update your computer's dictionary?

Not just right-click, "Add to dictionary." I mean to add a LOT of words at once. I have a new laptop and it keeps highlighting about 90% of my words as misspelled, even though I spell them right. Is there a faster way to add words? Is there a way to update your computer's dictionary?
That depends on the program. Windows itself doesn't have a dictionary.

How do I make an offline dictionary using Visual Basic 6.0?

The dictionary should have a database with arrays so users can search for a word and should also have a spelling logic program to search for close matches. How do I make an offline dictionary using Visual Basic 6.0?
that's not hard.

try to put the hierarchy of your design at first and then implement each step in it and if u have aproblem ask here.

LOL Thank you! I keep noticing that too and I've been trying to bite my tongue about it.Is 'does'(dose) the hardest word in the dictionary to spell?
    No. Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism is.
LOL. I need that. Thanks. Is 'does'(dose) the hardest word in the dictionary to spell?
seems like it "dosen't" it? Another thing that drives me crazy is UR for you are. Ur is a city in ancient Chaldea, grrrrrrrrrr
yesIs 'does'(dose) the hardest word in the dictionary to spell?
it can be for some LOL
No, I would imagine words like phanatophydia or deoxyribonucleic acid or glucose-6-dehydrogenase, or hemoglobinuria ect would be harder.

Wait..that's my objectives for next week's test :P

    *edit* Alisa..it's "opthamologist"
That's not half as bad as people spelling 'or' a-r-e. Get it? Cause it's 2 letters %26amp; 2 is 1/2 of 4. I know, I'm a geek sometimes.
    LOL! Apparently so.
Personally, I have a bit more trouble with

    taumatawha

    katangihan

    gakoauauot

    amateapoka

    iwhenuakit

    anatahu.

(That's all one word, but Y!A shortens it when it's all together.)

Actually, I think I may've just spelled that wrong. Lol.

I memorized it 6 years ago for an independent study, but it's a bit loose, by now.

EDIT: Actually, Alisa's right. A friend of mine's dad is an ophthalmologist, and he gave his son 20 bucks to learn to spell it right. Lol.
That all depends on what "is" is.
Antidisestablishmentarianism hmmm not the hardest, but supposedly the longest. I also love ophthalmologist. I have a daughter that is visually impaired and that one took me a while to remember.
lol....maybe they type to fast. mmm...Interesting.
    Try Pneumonoultramicros copicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

It's the longest word in the English language. 45 letters.
Heh, atleast it seems like so. You could ask is their (there) and such words hard to spell :P

A pointless but ah such a great question! :D
I think hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy is a bit harder to spell.
No I can remember that one because I work in healthcare and I use dose all the time when referring to medication dose. I have a hard time spelling definition (definiation). In my mind there just has to be an a in there but there is not.
this is kind of the wrong category...but no it is not the hardest word to spell...
hmmmm how about that supercalafragalistic word...... thats a long hard one.... I use to use that for hang man.. on people that didnt know the word...LOL... I had alot of losers..ha ha .... who makes up these words anyway??

Where can i find a dictionary listing fossils?

I found a fossil when I was about nine at an oilfield location. I remember a geologist asking if he could keep it. He said it was called a metacasauras. The 'ca' was stressed. I have no clue if I spelled that right. It is only a four inch piece and he told me a full sized one would be roughly a foot long. I was also told that most pieces found were less than two inches long. It still has a lot of color and also small bumps or spikes every 3/4 of an inch along the top. I'd really love to have some info on this fossil. Thanks.Where can i find a dictionary listing fossils?
I would contact the geology department of your local university or museum, if they cannot identify your fossil straight off, they will certainly have research resourcesWhere can i find a dictionary listing fossils?

Can someone help me with my spelling? I am trying to say?

a statement which includes the following, yet I am unsure if I have spelt the word Secome correctly. The context is

"...might further secome to tourist expectation". Can someone advise if i spelt this correct, as spell checker is not picking it up and I haven't at present got access to a dictionary.

    Many thanks,

Si .Can someone help me with my spelling? I am trying to say?
is it succumb you are after, thats the only word that i can think of.
it could be succumb if what you are trying to say is that it gives in to tourist expectations. Can someone help me with my spelling? I am trying to say?
It may be succumb.. as in change or overcome
Succumb. Can someone help me with my spelling? I am trying to say?
    succumb
succumbe is the d word mate - carry on
I think you mean succumb pet.
Do you mean 'succumb' (give in to or collapse under pressure)

    -Daniel
    yes succumb
You spelled it right, but when posting questions or answering them, type it the way regular people say it.Okay?
its succumb instead of secome =] tricky huh?
yeah..look like ur trying to say seccumb

    here's the definition:

    1. to give way to superior force; yield: to succumb to despair.

    2. to yield to disease, wounds, old age, etc.; die.
The part of the sentence you have written is not very clear, it may have been better to write it out in full, and ask for it to be corrected?

I assume that you are studying tourism, so depending on the first part of this sentence, suggest that there may be a much better phrase than 'succumb' to use within it?
    Its succumb
You have access to a computer but not a dictionary, jezzz whats the world coming to.
The sentence doesn't make much sense even with this but - succumb. As in 'give in to'.
    Succumb is the correct spelling
    Do you mean succumb?
    might further SUCCOMB. . .
    the word should be ...succumb.
I don't have the web address at hand but in your browser type Wordweb. It is a free downloadable dictionary that also converts words into different languages
Succumb: To yield or submit to an overpowering force of overwhelming desire; give in or give up

  • Why use a dictionary to see if a word is spelled right if you dont know how to spell it?

help me i am confused i mean who would look up a word to see how its spelled if you dont know how to spell it.Why use a dictionary to see if a word is spelled right if you dont know how to spell it?
I always just open up Microsoft Word and type the word the way I think it is spelled, then use spellchecker to get the correct spelling. Dictionaries aren't technologically advanced like that, and not as convenient. The only reason I use a dictionary is to look up what a word means or how it is pronounced. And for that I don't even use a book dictionary, I use an online one. http://dictionary.reference.com/

It has a dictionary and thesaurus available. Very convenient and quick!
If you know what it sounds like then you can look up how you think it's spelled, or if you think it is spelled a certain way then you can check if you're right. Why use a dictionary to see if a word is spelled right if you dont know how to spell it?
I usually have a go at typing it and use the pc spell checker. It always seems to come up with the right one.
I dp. It worked for me.Why use a dictionary to see if a word is spelled right if you dont know how to spell it?
Any intelligent person would so .

    Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Spell check does't always have what you need
Well, if you don't know, then you won't find it! Then you keep trying different spellings until you find it, that's simple enough, no?

    Toodles
You usually know enough about the word to look it up. I do it all the time.
A great question - one my students challenge me with every single year! You're right in theory - if you can't spell the word how can you look it up? But in school, you are also taught phonics, sounding out words, some dictionaries have pictures to help you 'associate' the word with the meaning - if you are reading a particular text - you should have some other context clues around the word in a sentence which should help you realize the spelling. Think about the syllables, prefix and suffix possibilities in the word when you 'sound it out'....all of these are strategies to help you "see' the word in the dictionary and check the meaning and then confirm the spelling.....
buy a bad spellers dictionary. I has the words listed how a bad speller would spell it , than the correct spelling. It's great for dummies like me
I was told to look it up in the dictionary. One problem was where to find it, for I could not spell it right. Thank God for spell checkers. Now it doesn't take twenty minutes to find the word in the dictionary. There is something to say for modern electronics.
Many times you can have a good idea of at least the first few letters. For example, if you don't know the word "phonetic", you can use your knowledge of English to know that an "f" sound means you should look under either f or ph in the dictionary. As your knowledge of prefixes, common root words, and other clues increases, you'll be able to find words much more easily.

What does the German word "Erdenbewohner" mean in English? I can't find that word in my German dictionary?

The closest word I can find is "Erdbewohner" ? So which spelling is the correct one? Or both are correct? What does the German word "Erdenbewohner" mean in English? I can't find that word in my German dictionary?
both are correct. "Erdenbewohner" sounds more poetical and, imo, more beautiful.

    it means "terrestrials"; "earthlings"

Actually they are synonyms, but German - as every other language - has subtle connotations.

Intuitively, I would use "Erdbewohner" talking about "earthlings, terrestrials" or species that really do live on/below the ground ("Erd-" meaning "soil" in this case),

while using "Erdenbewohner" when talking (poetically) about mankind/ all human beings.

    YMMV
Both are used, and they're the same thing: "Earth-dweller", "inhabitant of the Earth".

    See Google Books:

    "Erdbewohner" 29,500 hits http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Erdbewo鈥?/a>

"Erdenbewohner" 11,000 hits http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en%26amp;cli鈥?/a>What does the German word "Erdenbewohner" mean in English? I can't find that word in my German dictionary?
    earth dwellers
The Germanic languages (and those who speak them) form compound nouns so freely that you cannot expect a dictionary to record them all. This truth is less evident in English simply because we do not always write them as a single word, although this is purely a spelling convention. If, for instance I decided to clean my roof with a brush I would feel completely free to invent a word "roof brush" (whether I spelled it roofbrush, roof-brush, or roof brush) on the analogy of toothbrush and clothes' brush. My dicitionary has Erdbewohner, mearning "earthling". There are however several compounds of Erd (meaning "earth" which as in English can mean both the planet and dirt or soil), and also of Erden with the same sense. I see no reason not to use Erdenbewohner as a synonym of Erdbewohner, except that is has an unnecessary extra syllable. What does the German word "Erdenbewohner" mean in English? I can't find that word in my German dictionary?
Answer 1 and 2 are correct. I had to look it up on the web by Google.

I'm on a roll, so don't mind me now!

Hopefully you found what you're looking for.

    Greetings,

    MeneerWitte
"inhabitant of the Earth" is the best translation. Earthlings would be Erdlinge and Terrestrials would be Terrestrische. Erdbewohner doesn't sound so much like scifi.

We'd probably use the SMS abbreviations with some 'messenger-speak' thrown in... Oh, and your question would look very different!

It wouldn't hurt if English spelling could more closely reflect the pronunciation sometimes, but it would be hard to co-ordinate agreement among all the language user groups around the world.

A good point made about Pre-18th Century English before Johnson tried to standardize spelling, but don't forget; we should always leave room for a living language to grow and evolve - it will anyway - and that has to include the written form too.Suppose we suddenly toss out all spelling rules, dictionaries and spelling checkers what will be the results?
You will never learn to use commas correctly. Basically, I think people will just continue to do things correctly, as that's the way we've been brought up. (At least, that's the way I've been brought up.)
Read Shakespeare, Chaucer, Byron, and any old English stuff you can find on the Internet. See what it was like before there was standard English spelling. Find out how hard it is to tell which word is which. After all, "nae," "naw," and "nye" could all mean "no" or they could mean totally different things.Suppose we suddenly toss out all spelling rules, dictionaries and spelling checkers what will be the results?

If a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?

ive seen a couple of words in the dictionary that look spelt wrongIf a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?
That's what the dictionary is for to let us know what looks right or wrong to us vs what it right. So, chances are it's right in the dictionary even though it may not look right to you or me.
Ha ha, that's such an oxymoron. If a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?
Type in the words you think are spelt wrong online.
Look them up merriam-webster online. Or better yet, tell them to us, I'll ask my Latin teacher (he definitely knows.)If a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?
Well if the word was spelled wrong, you'll never have to look up that word because it doesn't exist... you'll never have the need to seek that wrongly spelled word.
Well, the aren't spelled wrong. Dictionaries don't have typos; dictionary companies work on a full work schedule, all year. Their job is to check for these things. Even if something is spelled wrong, the dictionary is always right. Remember that: if the dictionary says "spelt" is spelled wrong (which it is), they have a reason for it. You can't say a dictionary is wrong. That's why someone said it's an oxymoron; it is.

How do we go about getting words added to the Yahoo dictionary?

I noticed words can sometimes be added if they are underlined in red and you right click on them. Then you can select to add the word at that time. LOL is not a word, it did come up and I added it to the dictionary. But still it comes up as misspelled. Oh well.
I doubt very much that Yahoo would respond to a request to add words to their limited dictionary. Great question Joyce...I've often wondered the same thing. Maybe Yahoo believes in the dumbing down of everyone? I'd like to add Sheltie. YA makes it two words...go figure.
I can think of several, but no idea how to go about it.
yes, I do agree with you. Yahoo spell check isn't really up to par, so I just have my handy pocket dictionary on hand at all times.

but i wouldn't hold my breath, the last thing yahoo is concerned about is us, the users.

Implementing a method in a trie for a dictionary?

String[] WordDictionary.findClosest(String str, int dist, int max)

This method will return up to max words that are close to the spelling of str. The words you return may differ in at most dist characters from str.

how would i do this for java?

thanksImplementing a method in a trie for a dictionary?
Well depending on the dictionary, English has over 100,000 words, I would definitely consider filtering out words as much as I could as fast as I could.

Now here is a question is workbench and bench a valid word if dist is 4 or more? or do they need to be the same length sort of like mastermind, (you have 3 are correct position and correct color and 2 are correct color and incorrect position.) but you have to have 5 tokens on each guess.

Filter out words that are shorter than str.length()-dist and longer than str.length()+dist ie

looking for words like "bench" and a dist of 3, "workbench" should not be returned since it is 4 letters off. may be different based on what the assignment is suppose to be.

one algorithm would be brute force...

    for(i = 0; i %26lt;= totalwords; i++){

// filter based on if their length is still within range (may need to be the same length)

    if (str.length()-dist %26lt;= dictionary[i].length() %26amp;%26amp; dictionary[i].length() %26lt;= str.length()+dist){

    // still a candidate

// compare each letter in current dictionary word and given word, increment a counter of exact matches (sort of like mastermind, correct color, correct position)

    if( str.length() - dist %26lt;= count) {

current dictionary word is a good word, add it to the list.

    }

// now if "bench" could return "workbench" with a dist being 4 or more.

// you would need to have 2 nested for loops and test does b match w, no

The other option is if you like regex'es you could create a pattern being for "bench"

"$(.+)([b])(.+)([e])(.+)([n])(.+)([c])鈥?I don't know if "(.+)" is correct pattern and test each group members and if the wildcards letters are a total more than dist letters, that dictionary word is not a valid word.

  • Remove an accidental entry in spell check dictionary? Using latest Mac and Opera.?

I misspelled the word "experience". Spell check underlined it. I was going to right-click then choose the correctly spelled word from the list to replace it. Instead I accidentally clicked the option to add the misspelled word to the dictionary. Now it won't correct it when I misspell it exactly the way I did before. I don't remember exactly how I spelled it so I can't misspell it again the same way then choose "remove word" from the right-click menu.

Where do I go to find and remove the misspelled word from the dictionary? Is it in Opera? Is it in the Mac OS somewhere?Remove an accidental entry in spell check dictionary? Using latest Mac and Opera.?

i will be checking your answers lolIs there any words in the dictionary spelt wrong?
If there ARE any words in the dictionary SPELLED wrongLY they would be excused as simply being "typos" - that's "typographical error" which means a misprint.
Which dictionary are you talking about? There is more than one dictionary.

Good Luck!!!Is there any words in the dictionary spelt wrong?
That's a funny question! I would hope not!
No, I was only joking, some dictionary's spell ''Birthday'' wrong, oh! that reminds me its my birthday soon. Wish me 'Happy Birthday', wont you, see my profile I'm trying to get a 'Net party together on the day.Is there any words in the dictionary spelt wrong?
firstly it is "ARE the any WORDS..."
you will find the back pages of the dictionaries, pages stating Commonly Misspelt Words...A -Z, check it out for yourself.
    Yes, it's WRONG!
why don't you go through them all and check, if you find one that is wrong check in a dictionary to see how it is spelt. Numb skull
No, but there are certainly enough in YOUR sentence:

Here is the correction: ARE there any words in the dictionary that are SPELLED wrong?

Pay more attention in English class, I am assuming it is your first and only language therefore you owe it to yourself to speak, read and write it well
I know a word that is spelt wrong in dictionary !!!

    It's WRONG.

Wrong is spelt Wrong, am I right or wrong !!!
    oh no... believe me.

Every word is studied by a all bunch of professors and PHDs for months before being printed.

My grandfather is part of the Academie de la langue francaise, therefore he takes part in the publishing of french dictionnaries.

they sometimes have assemblies where they discuss about a word and its origins for hours.

    quite a cool job.
you mean "Are there any words in the dictionary spelt wrong?"
There might be, but I haven't found any yet.
Just for those of you who are trying to correct the asker's grammar-- correct ALL OF IT for goodness sake.

"Spelt" is a type of wheat. "Spelled" is the past tense of spell.

And, yes, I imagine there are. What else would be the reason for so many new editions, besides the occasional additional word?
    only wrong
maybe.... but there are in your sentence
I shouldn't think so since for a word to even get into the dictionary it goes through tonnes of procedures, hence why they make such a big deal about adding words
    Wrong is spely W R O N G
    Yep - The word W-R-O-N-G,
Yes, there was the famous word "dord" in Webster's:

it's about time they did it... it's taking a tad bit too long!
It's outrageous that YA can't seem to include the proper name of a major presidential candidate in its spelling dictionary. I would hope that upon his election they would finally get it together.Do you think YA will update it's dictionary if Obama gets elected?
    maybe??
I wouldn't count on it. Most automatic spell-checkers flag me constantly. That little gadge off to the right never goes away, no matter what I write and I'm pretty careful. I teach English, after all, and I keep a dictionary next to my desk. But these computers only know what people teach them. Someone has to take the time to go into their guts and do a little work. It's a lot easier not to bother. These little things also tell me that I put in too much punctuation, or, if I decide to highlight something by putting it in capital letters, they flag that too. It's all very silly because I know perfectly well what I'm doing. But you can't argue with a computer. It's much too stupid, isn't it? By the way, the computer inevitably tells me I've misspelled my own name (first and last), and my children's names. Well, I know I haven't! Back in the old days, I used a Macintosh and we had a function where we could into the dictionary ourselves and add words to it so that it would quit flagging things like this that we used all the time. I do wish that the PCs of the world would catch up to the old Mac. I hated leaving the Mac, I really did. It used to advertise itself as "the computer for the rest of us." Yes, indeed, it was. It didn't bomb half as often as the PC does either. And when it did, it usually told me why. This one tells the same thing, time and again, that I have a virus or too many add-ons to my tool bar. Well, I know neither one is true. It's faulty plumbing, I say. The mouse runs over a toolbar and the screen goes squirrelly. Or I open three windows and oig! off it goes. Or I close something and it refuses to leave the screen. None of these things happened with the Mac. Gee, I sure miss my old Mac! I could put accent marks on Spanish and French words, create fonts for Egyptian hieroglyphs and Chinese words and...ah well, maybe in another 50 years PC will catch up with where Mac was back in 1980.Do you think YA will update it's dictionary if Obama gets elected?
You want to know the sad part? They already did. If you were to type Obama into a Qor A. you used to get ABM as your first choice. Thank God the geniuses at Y!A fixed that. That mistake would be embarrassing.
That's probably how the ballots that were sent out in one city had Osama for a choice. (they only sent out 200 before it was caught)

Barrack Hussein Osama - that's what spell check suggests.
Well, such window dressing takes time, and especially someone who can do something about it has to be aware of it, which means someone needs to write to the appropriate department at Yahoo.

Fortunately, at Google, there is an automation device that tallies popular searches and puts them under that "I'm feeling lucky" button with some hilarious results. At one time, 'more evil than Satan' would pop up Microsoft. In 2005, typing in 'failure' and hitting that button for most frequent selected search results led to the Bush White House. Today you can type in 'miserable failure' and get an interesting result.

I am looking for a word that I cannot find in the dictionary.?

When my kids are on edge, or someone seems nervous, or I notice someone who can't sit still, I call that person "ancie", pronounced like the word fancy without the "f". How is it spelled exactly? I tried a dictionary to no avail. I tried looking in a thesaurus and didn't find it there either, so I asked my wife if she knew the word from when she was growing up at home and she said it was a word that her family used too. I guess one problem with a dictionary is that you almost have to know how to spell the word in order to see if you're correct or not. In this case, I'm not sure how it's spelled. Any help would be appreciated because I went to use this word in a letter and my spell check hates it. It won't give me any alternatives either, so if I can get the proper spelling, I'm going to add it to my spell check dictionary. Thanks.I am looking for a word that I cannot find in the dictionary.?
You must mean 'antsy' or 'anxious'.
This is not really a word in the English language. It's like a slang term and it won't be in any dictionary until a certain amount of people recognise it as a real word. I've never heard of "ANCIE" myself.

    4.Oxford dictionary's spelling correction .

5.Other Idea for a change in spellings like physiology .When will you decide an agree to write spelling "iland " instead of "island" ...?
Well, I highly doubt Oxford will change the spelling on the word, as there would be no reason to - people can deal with the silent "s", it's part of our language/speech pattern. However, Oxford dictionary's spelling change would be the ONLY reason I would ever spell the word differently.
I like fizziology, the study of soda pop.

I'm open for any changes that make sense. When will you decide an agree to write spelling "iland " instead of "island" ...?
    I will go with no.5...

When,You would write GHETIO As "Fish"...

    How???

Okk...Take Rough...in the word "rough" ,"gh" is pronounced as "F''...then many times "E'' is Pronounced as "I" and In the word "station","tio" is pronounced as "sh"...so...when you will write spelling "GHETIO" instead of "Fish"..i will write iland...
English is not a phonetic language.

If you change one word like "island," you will have to change a ton of other words.

And think of accents--which country's accent are you going to model your phonetic spellings after?

Is it color or colour, labor or labour?

Island just isn't worth the trouble, and I would imagine the Rhode "Ilanders" would agree.

And let me assure you, they ain'tagonna fallow no Oxferd diktonery. When will you decide an agree to write spelling "iland " instead of "island" ...?
The Pope and/or Bush can kma. So can any celebrtiy who wants to change the spelling.

Thats how the damn word is spelled, so leave it alone.

And I will now spell fish G-H-E-T-I-O
English is not its own language (for the most part). It has been heavily influenced by many other languages, which is why there are so many spellings we might think of as strange.

The word island is a hybrid word between isle and land.

isle comes from the Old French isle by way of Latin's "insula" (vulgar latin "isula")

Old English got lazy and ignored the s, eventually spelling it "ile". Over time, the "s" was added back in for a "proper" spelling but the sound of the "s" was still ignored.

I agree that changing the spelling of some words may seem easier, may actually be easier to read, etc. But I don't know that it is the best way to do things. Many of us like and appreciate word histories. And though it makes English more difficult to learn (especially for foreigners), it is interesting to be able to look at a word and often know at least its basic beginings because of its spellings.

And if Oxford were to do anything, it would not be a "correction" it would be a "change". And if we are going to change anything, then let it be that we start pronouncing the "s" in island - since that's the way it originally was (and still is in Romance languages)

But that's just my opinion :)
the George Bernard Shaw made up word is GHOTI

    gh as in lauGH

    o as in wOmen

    ti as in naTIon

and that is the way he explained it

and if the french cannot decide on isle or ile, why should we even care. your ilan (half the people do not pronounce the d either, so why keep it) seems like some sort of sloppy teenage text messaging, just like leaving the d off of the and

"wen wil u agree 2 rite spelin ilan sted uv island"

then don't read it. simple as that.

I agree that the English language is not an easy one to learn. It is not easy because it is the result of the mixture of many languages starting with the tribal dialects of the Angles in the pre-Roman Empire era in what is now known as England. It then changed as one group of invaders after another came to the "Isles of the Angles" as they were first known to plunder and pillage. Some came and went while others stayed and intermarried with the native people. Over time, the cultures and languages of these invading tribes from Scandinavia and what is now known as Germany (used to be called Saxony) blended in with that of the original inhabitants. The invasion of the Roman Empire brought the language of Latin and all the cultural influences of the Roman way of life. Even after that, words and phrases from other languages continued to be added to the language that came to be known as "English" even to this very day.

You wouldn't even recognize the earliest form of English to ever by written down. You can see a sample of it in the amazing poem Beowulf. Buy or borrow Seamus Haney's translation as it has both the "Old English" and modern English versions in it. Then you'll see what I mean. If you hear Old English spoken (as best as modern scholars can guess at it,) it sounds more like Swedish or Welsh than the English we are used to.

"Hwaet we Gar-Dena in gear-dagum peod-cyninga prym gefrunon, hu oa aepelingas ellen fremedon." That means "So. The Spear-Danes in days gone by and the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness." in Old English. See what I mean?

Yes, English has actually changed a lot over the course of the last several hundred years and is still changing. The changes come gradually though. You can't suddenly change it to suit you. Suing anyone won't help you a bit. Be glad that we have official dictionaries. If it weren't for them, it would be really hard to read anything as every person who wrote could spell words any way he wanted. He could even make up words that no one else knew the meaning of. This was the case with English until Daniel Webster (signer of the U.S. Constitution among other worthy deeds) wrote the first official English Dictionary back in the 1700's.

Whut doz u thik mi sentse saz her? Kid uv hrd 2 red iz e? Messes like that and worse are what we have without standardized spelling and grammar.

Squeamish is the correct spelling and means that a person is of delicate stomach or conscience. It can either be applied to a physical defect or a mental one. Hope this is of help.

Make flash cards of words you can't remember, and go over them several times a day. Consult a dictionary and be sure you have the right meaning.

Write -what you do with a pen or a typewriter.

Wright - it's used as a last name, but not as a verb.

    Right - correct.

Check your spelling - not "chack."

Open your application data folder. On XP or Vista, go to your Start menu and hit Run (or just press Windows-R) and paste in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles; on your Mac, navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles. Find your profile folder, which by default should look something like xxxxxxxx.default. Inside your profile folder, find the file called persdict.dat and open it up in your text editor of choice. Now just find the misspelling, delete it, and you're done.

i have an old work computer running windows 3.11 and microsoft word 6, my boss has just given me a new computer with windows xp pro and office 2007, being a doctor my old system had a lot of words added to spell check to help me write reports now the new office picked up common words that i use as being misspelled when i know there correct i don't want to have to create a whole new dictionary, is there a way to export these setting from the old system i know office xp and above kept them as a .dic file where does the old windows store these files.

thank youHow do i import my old dictionary (spell check) from word 6.0 to office 2007 windows 3.11 to windows XP?
    Hi,

Copy the custom dictionary from the old to the new system. The XP path of the dictionary is below, and I think you should find it in the same location on your old windows version. If not, do a search (Start/Search... "custom.dic").

    C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

You will find a text file named CUSTOM.DIC. Just copy that on over, and you should be set to go!

Why does "dieing" not show up in spell check when the correct spelling is "dying".?

I did a search on some dictionary websites. When you type "dieing" it gives you results for "die" and "dying". So if the spelling is "dying" why does spell check not catch it?Why does "dieing" not show up in spell check when the correct spelling is "dying".?
    Die= dying....died

    Dye= dying....dyed

    Diet- dieting.....dieted

Why does "dieing" not show up in spell check when the correct spelling is "dying".?
The Yahoo! Spell check is flawed. It doesn't ask you to capitalize words such as "christian" or proper nouns and many spellings it suggests are incorrect. Use your own grammatical skills,a dictionary or a reliable on-line database. This device is also prone to scrambling my words after I use it! Now I just ignore it and use my own good sense. Why does "dieing" not show up in spell check when the correct spelling is "dying".?
Dieing is not a word. This is one of the many reasons you should NOT rely on spell check. Spell check is not infallible. Spell check will ultimately get you into trouble.

    Use a dictionary.

On spell checking, can I saved special words into a dictionary, is there such a thing in Yahoo?

Other spell checkers like Google, AOL etc one has the option in saving the words that the spell checker considers misspelled, and maybe valid words just not in the English dictionary, in those spell checkers one of the options is add into dictionary, have not ever seen this in Yahoo mail spell checker???On spell checking, can I saved special words into a dictionary, is there such a thing in Yahoo?
unlike the others, yahoo spellchecker is web-based dictionary and therefore saving special words or characters is not an option. With Gmail you can store this info into your account settings and all you are really doing is writing a simple HTML code to ignore those words when spell checking within your id...(you aren't really writing the code but that's what it does when you select to add it) with AOL Browser its basically the same but it actually stores it within your preferences rather than on-line. The main reason Yahoo doesn't do that is because although you may be logged into yahoo in the US every service and page within Yahoo is worldwide, so it would have to translate every entry from every user in order to store a word in the dictionary.

How come slang words never get into the dictionary?

an eglish rule is that if people use a word a lot then it becomes a real word and is put in the dictionary. "ain't, ghetto..." never in it. also misspelled words like "alot". words have to be spelled one way only? what about email, e mail, and e-mail? they're all correct. How come slang words never get into the dictionary?
Slang words are definitely found in good dictionaries. Mis-spellings are not words so they wouldn't be in. Alot is not a word. A lot is two and allot is one.

Ain't is defined in my dictionary as: contracted form of 'are not'. Also used for am or is not. Also for has not and have not.

email e-mail and E-mail are all shown as accepted abbreviations for electronic mail. All are correct.
eglish huh? Why do you need slang? Its stupid. How come slang words never get into the dictionary?
Does this really matter? I think you are over thinking it; put your brains to better use. No offence intended
When I am not usre of a slang word I look it up in the urban dictionary. How come slang words never get into the dictionary?
a lot of slang words get put in the dictionary. it just takes time for people to add those words into the dictionary.
Slang words should not be in a dictionary at all
Oh but they DO get into dictionaries. It's just a question of how many people use a word or term, how often, for how long. Good dictionaries reflect enduring popular usage as much as they do standard vocabulary, because they recognize that language is an organic, ever-evolving thing.
ONE THING ALOT IS TWO WORDS IT'S SPELLED A LOT

AND THEY HAVE A SLANG DICTIONARY WITH JUST SLANG WORDS
there are so many different slang terms. even ones you've never heard. and the dictionary is for real words, not slang. but i have seen "ain't" in a dictionary before. maybe you just need a newer dictionary.
Part of it is that slang has a tendancy to turn over so quickly, that what may be the current rage in 1984 has all but disappeared in 1994 and is no longer valid.

A word getting into the dictionary is about as hard as getting someone declaired a saint
Actually, many slang words do go into the dictionary. It is usually indicated with "sl" to let the reader know that the word is indeed slang and is not to be used in formal communication.

Why would common misspellings go into the dictionary? There is only ONE correct way to spell a word, although many people may take liberties when communicating on the internet. The only correct way to say "virtual mail" is "e-mail."
b-cause they are made up words people just think up depending on the situation. i think......

There is an autocorrect thing on in the Tools Drop Down menu. It has an autocorrect that changed HDA to HAD. Simply go into the AutoCorrect thing and remove the autocorrect for the specified word. No way to add any words in yahoo dictionary. Actually the yahoo dictionary is stored in yahoo server. U can't edit this.Is there any way to add words to the spell-check dictionary on Yahoo?
Yahoo should create a local on my PC lists of frequently used words and have the spell check use those words plus the ones on the server. Some secondary link. It's ridiculous they way words are misused and misspelled! Why won't people use a dictionary to make sure words are spelled correctly before pushing the send button?
Very interesting question, my dear. There is a vast multitude of people who have little or no regard for the language arts including English as it is written and meant to be read. Nor do they wish to improve! Why won't people use a dictionary to make sure words are spelled correctly before pushing the send button?
People use this site mainly for quick answers that require little effort on their part; if they wanted to take the time to look things up, they'd just go to wikipedia on their own.

  • If something was miss-spelled in a dictionary how would we know?

Wow there are lot of people who can't spell in this thread!

The word is "misspelled" not "misspelt" or "miss-spelled". You don't need a hyphen despite what you may think and it's a mistake to include one (and unless you're Shakespeare, which you aren't, you shouldn't reinvent the spelling system to suit your own needs, it's why there are rules in the first place).

Anyway it would be a very rare occurrence to find a misspelled word in a dictionary because they're checked, rechecked and checked again. I know people who work on putting dictionaries together and I can tell you that they're pretty pedantic people who don't usually miss stuff like that.If something was miss-spelled in a dictionary how would we know?
    It's actually 'misspelt'.

    So ner.

    EDIT - "misspell - verb

Spell misspell with a double s. The different forms of this verb are: misspells, misspelling; the past tense is misspelt or misspelled."
    It's 'misspelled'.

    ...and I didn't even need a dictionary.

If you were that paranoid, you'd use two dictionaries and cross-reference.

EDIT: even without the dash, you still have to many 's's in there. If something was miss-spelled in a dictionary how would we know?
you would compare it with other dictionaries from other companies and if one spelling is outnumbered then it is obviously miss-spelled.
You would check other sources, and then there is just a general way of telling, if your not an idiot at the English language.

  • Does the spell-check on Answers use an English or American dictionary?

either my spelling is getting worse or the English language has Changed.Does the spell-check on Answers use an English or American dictionary?
The English language is always changing, "factoid" "bling bling". But, Answers uses a Yahoo dictionary just like Word uses a Microsoft dictionary. At one time "Microsoft" showed up as a spelling error in Word. Even Latin, which is considered to be a dead language, is changing. The Catholic church uses Latin and has had to add words for things like "computer".

Don't feel bad, if you noticed a problem, then you probably know how to spell. Most people in the day and age do not have a clue about either spelling nor grammar.
I think AmericanDoes the spell-check on Answers use an English or American dictionary?
Type them into an outlook express email or word document and spell check them before you put your answer then copy paste it into the box. Good Luck.
huh?Does the spell-check on Answers use an English or American dictionary?
probably a combination of both types.
    English?
Check some words like labor - labour night nite

    Just did, it's American spelling
I think it uses American English.
It corrects my errors just fine.....
I use IeSpell Check, because the Yahoo version does not always work correctly. (It is U. S. American version).
    i think both why
Color Colour, Encyclopedia, Encyclopaedia, Labor, Labour... DEFINITELY American!
    Colour

    Color

It chooses the English spelling as opposed to the American spelling. It might depend on your profile setting (i.e. what you said when it asked for your country)
    It's probably your spelling.
check a word like color..... checked it, they use an English dictionary
More likely American sorry to say...
    English dictionary
Why does yahoo ask for an alternate e-mail address instead of an alternative. You can't rely on the internet for spelling or maybe you can but there need to be a grammar syntax etc check
Sometimes the spelling check won't work okay. It passed the wrong spellings, at least I had nemerous encounters with yahoo's 'check spelling'. Ultimately, now I check them through merriam-webster toolbar for verifying correct spellings. I think many others will agree ?
checked with this answer it proved that English was the centre of spoken language therefore spell-check uses an English dictionary.
If you come through the "United States" link, it's American. If you come through the "United Kingdom" link, it's British. I mean the links at the bottom. I've tried this, and that's how it works. Your question is under the British Yahoo Answers, so I think it was checked for British spelling.

See the internet address of the post. If it starts with "uk.answers.yahoo.com..." then it's British, if it starts with "answers.yahoo.com..." (without the uk. part) then it's American.

If a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?

so the person who wrote it could be making it up and talking crap but we all just belive thats how it should be spelled! well who says they are spelling it right? If a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?
In English whoever writes the dictionary sets the spelling, therefore they cannot technically be wrong... As a matter of fact, dictionaries from the 1700 and 1800's did not all spell words in the same way (ex. geol vs jail)...

In other languages, such as French and Italian, there is actually a central institution that decides which words are accepted into the language, how they are spelled and what their usage is. There is no such institution for the English language. If a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?
Because there's been a consensus on spelling standard. If a word in a dictionary is misspelled, how would you know?
    I think you're over-analyzing things. Just relax!
Dictionaries, more than most books, are repeatedly proofread before they go to print. The likelihood of this happening is extremely minuscule and not something you should be worrying your pretty little head about.

When we were at school and we didn't know how to spell a word, why were we told to look in the dictionary?

How can you find a word if you don't know how to spell it?When we were at school and we didn't know how to spell a word, why were we told to look in the dictionary?
My guess, and it is only a guess, would be that either it is a form of proactive learning, as opposed to passive learning or teachers have always been secretly slave drivers? = P

Although to be honest, I really can't remember my school days, I must be getting old! When we were at school and we didn't know how to spell a word, why were we told to look in the dictionary?
we now use the internet, even if you misspell the word, the search engines always ask if you meant a certain correctly spelled word derived from the letters you typed in, usually pointing the word you ARE searching. i'm just stating the apparent.

You don't deserve to win. Not only is your observation not true (look at the spelling bee documentary from a couple of years ago, for instance), but you are perpetuating ignorant stereotypes.

    Bad luck to you.
Its not true that chinese people win those comps. in fact Indians are mostly the winners. However there are no hard and fast rule that a person from such and such country will win. So believe in yourself and best of Luck.

Help finding a English-German Dictionary with IPA?

Does anyone know of any English-German/German-English Dictionaries that also have an IPA spelling of the words in German? I am trying to learn German. I have some history using IPA and I would like to see it in the next dictionary I buy. I've checked Amazon and it doesn't seem to specify whether the dictionaries have IPA in them or not. If there is anyone who knows of an actual title of a specific English-German dictionary with IPA, could you please refer me?Help finding a English-German Dictionary with IPA?
I have the following dictionary and it has IPA for the German words:

    Collins Gem German Dictionary

Ever know someone who was super goodie-goodie and always judging & controlling?

But then they did exactly what they were accusing and judging everybody else for, only to go back to being Gigagood (That's actually a word in the spelling dictionary!) and judging acting like they would never do such a thing?

How do you handle it?Ever know someone who was super goodie-goodie and always judging %26amp; controlling?
    Yes - me!

    handle it?

start with counseling or therapy to get to the underlying issues from childhood that makes you act that way. It may have something to do with bad self worth and self respect caused by an unhappy childhood and faulty parenting or genetics. The troubled person just needs to discover what is causing this behavior and be given a system to undo the childhood damages - therapy, religion, yoga, counseling, prayer, hypno-therapy, and/all forms of SELF EXAMINATION.
Oh how strong is thy kingdom,

    how mighty thy throne,

    when built upon the foundation

    of self righteousness.

How well do the robes of judgment fit

    when tailor made for thyself.

Thou sit in judgment of me,

and are not even able to judge thyself

Condemned to lies of you life,

    bound to self service,

If you were to judge yourself,

would you not be guilty of the same crime?

What then would be thy sentence?Ever know someone who was super goodie-goodie and always judging %26amp; controlling?
I've known people like that...the best thing to do is to back away from them and have as little to do with them as possible.
Everyone has! You let them have their cake and eat it too; no one will stop them from being immature and judgmental so it's best to just stay out of their paths.Ever know someone who was super goodie-goodie and always judging %26amp; controlling?
Several prominent politicians and evangelists spring to mind.
    I see you've just met my husband's ex-wife.
I dont...I leave them to drown in all their own glory...alone!

people like this never see themselves like everyone else see's them...theres no point in even trying.
Its called Hypocrisy and its all over the place. I avoid those types.
    It's a long fall from A to H!!

Why is it that every time i need to spell 'necessary' I need a dictionary?

Oh great this time I didn't need the dictionary...Why is it that every time i need to spell 'necessary' I need a dictionary?
I have taught for 30 years and I still have trouble with absence or is it absense. I think it is because when I write a note home, I am thinking that the student in question is absent of lot of sense. And, don't get me started on words that end in "s" that you make possessive. How are you with the word for what Native Americans wear on their feet? Why is it that every time i need to spell 'necessary' I need a dictionary?
Probably confusion between "c" and "s", which resemble each other phonetically.

Just keep it in your mind: one "c" and two "s"s.
