What words did the dictionary spell rong?

There are so many words that are spelled so as to frustrate your deciphering them phonetically... which are the worst?

Victuals, which is properly pronounced vittles. And was pronounced that way when someone decided how it should be spelled.

There are two reasons why English is so hard to spell.

First, when writing became fairly common there was still a great deal of dialectal differences (there are even now in the more rural areas). People would write according to their local dialect's pronunciation, or according to the court's dialect and sometimes, like "victuals", they would go back to the latin spelling. The spelling eventually standardized - with spellings from all the different dialects.

The second thing that makes spelling hard is how many of our words come from other languages. As someone said: "English doesn't borrow words from other languages. It knocks them down, drags them into an alley and rifles their pockets". *grin* This is complicated by the fact that some languages have sounds not found in English, such as "Bach" (whose ending sounds a lot like spitting up a hairball). Not to mention when people mishear a foreign word (there is no "curry" in any East Indian language). What words did the dictionary spell rong?

i tink its lyke wadeva cuz lyk none aktully carez. i dont so y shud u?? afta all dis iz the us were u ken say anydin u want

Translation: I think it's, like, whatever because -- like -- no one actually cares. I don't so why should you? After all, this is the U.S. where you can say anything you want.

That sentence killed me to write. x_x Personally, I'm a grammar freak, so I pop an artery every time I see the word "lyke" or something of the like.
